Executive Director
Alice Ruby, MPH, MPPM
Alice Ruby joined TSBC as Executive Director in 2002. She has 30+ years experience in health care, including health education, research, and client services with an emphasis on women’s health and sexual health issues. Her management experience and education have focused on the areas of non-profit administration, quality improvement, operations management, and customer service. She received Yale University’s School of Epidemiology and Public Health awards for commitment to social justice and community-based public health. Ms. Ruby collaborates on research with Dr. Scheib, Director of TSBC’s research program, and is also the mother of a donor-conceived child. Ms. Ruby serves on the Board of Advisors for Family Equality Council, a national organization that connects, supports, and represents LGBTQ families, and was formerly on the Board of Directors for Our Family Coalition, a Bay Area non-profit that advances equity* for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) families with children through support, education, and advocacy.
Medical Director and Tissue Bank Director
Lorraine Bonner, MD
Dr. Bonner is a graduate of Stanford University Medical School and a past Chair of the Ethics Committee at Summit Medical Center. Dr. Bonner has been TSBC’s Medical Director since 2001.
Research Director
Joanna Scheib, PHD
Dr. Scheib conducts research on psychosocial issues related to family-building through donor conception. Findings are used toward TSBC program practice and policy, most notably the Identity-Release® Program, and disseminated more generally through publishing and speaking. Current research includes identifying factors that predict conception and understanding the experiences of donor-conceived people, sperm donors and families. She is a member of the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Mental Health Professional Group (past Abstract Committee and Scientific Development Committee chairs, Sperm and Egg Donor Registry Task Force member, Regional Conference & Workshop co-organizer). Dr. Scheib joined TSBC in 1996 (PhD, McMaster University in Canada; post-doctoral scholar, Universities of New Mexico and California). Dr. Scheib is jointly appointed as Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Davis and has been TSBC’s Research Director since 2000.
Genetic Counselor
Janine Mash, LCGC
Janine Mash is a licensed and board certified genetic counselor specializing in preconception and prenatal counseling. Trained at the University of Colorado, Janine obtained an extensive background in laboratory testing before moving onto clinical work at Natera, UCSF, and Stanford. She is the founder of San Francisco Genetic Counseling and joined TSBC in 2019. On a personal level, Janine is a mother of three daughters. She is an advocate of evidence-based medicine and strongly believes everyone has the right to have a family and give birth where they feel most comfortable, supported by providers with their best interests at heart.
Boards
TSBC has two boards that provide assistance with legal, medical, and ethical policy issues: a Board of Directors and a Medical Advisory Committee. The Board of Directors meets every other month to discuss current TSBC issues and to formulate policy. Members of the Medical Advisory Committee are available as needed to provide guidance in their respective areas of expertise.
