Mission Statement

As the only non-profit sperm bank in the United States, TSBC’s mission is to provide services to all women and men who choose to create or expand their families through donor insemination and sperm storage.

In a supportive and nonjudgmental environment, TSBC provides education and resources on donor insemination and fertility options. To promote openness, our donor identity-release program – the first in the world – allows each child, at the age of eighteen, to learn the identity of his or her donor.

To enhance societal understanding and to inform industry practices, TSBC conducts research on the psychosocial implications of donor insemination.

TSBC is a catalyst for change, and with an unwavering commitment to reproductive freedom, makes the dream of family a reality.

History

The Sperm Bank of California (TSBC) began operations on October 5, 1982 in Oakland, California. We began as a project of the Oakland Feminist Women's Health Center, a family planning clinic. TSBC and the clinic shared facilities until 1988, when TSBC split off to incorporate as an independent nonprofit corporation and moved to a larger site in Oakland. In 1995, we moved to our present location in downtown Berkeley.

TSBC conducts research on the psychosocial implications of donor insemination to enhance societal acceptance of alternative family building and to inform and challenge industry practices. As a catalyst for change, TSBC pioneered a donor Identity-Release® Program, allowing children at the age of 18 to learn their donor's identity.TSBC has a history of pioneering work in the field of reproductive technologies. We were the first sperm bank in the United States to:
  • create the Identity-Release® Program

  • serve lesbian couples and single women

  • provide extensive personal and family medical histories on donors

  • offer instruction on how to perform inseminations at home

  • document conception and birth rates

  • track and limit the number of births per donor

  • operate as a nonprofit organization
